At The Carraway Center, our mission is to empower each child with the hope, understanding, and abilities they need to be successful in school and in life. Our summer education programs and workshops are designed to help students develop successful study habits and individual learning strategies that can be applied in the classroom and beyond.
We invite your child to attend one or more of our summer education programs and workshops. Our programs are based on cognitive learning strategies and neuroscience research and are available for students entering grades 5 - 12.
The Carraway Center offers these workshops for rising 5th - 12th grade students the 2-3 weeks before their school year begins. Students may choose to attend one or more workshops during the week. Available times and dates are included below.
The study and learning techniques mini-courses are designed to teach students how to organize materials, manage time wisely, prepare for upcoming deadlines, take notes, sustain attention, manage remote learning and efficiently study for tests and exams.
*Additional small group workshops can be put together by parents for alternate dates.
The Critical Reading Workshop is for students who want to improve their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. The course is adapted to meet grade level expectations and focuses on reading novels, textbooks, articles, and standardized reading passages. Students learn techniques for improving their comprehension, active reading, maintaining attention, annotating, taking notes, answering questions, making inferences and writing summaries. A kit of course materials will be provided for the student prior to the beginning of the course.
The Academic Writing Workshop is for students who want to enhance their writing skills with better organization, editing, and persuasive writing techniques. The course is specifically designed for writing required in each grade level. Younger students learn how to write topic sentences and strong supporting details. Junior high students learn how to write 3 and 5 paragraph essays with strong organization, details and descriptive language. High school students focus on enhancing their writing techniques with tools useful for writing essays, themes, research papers and college applications and essays. A kit of course materials will be provided for the student prior to the beginning of the course.
The ISEE Prep Workshop provides general and specific test-taking strategies for the ISEE and provides familiarity with the layout and components of the test. A practice test is administered for 3 hours on the first day and a predicted score is provided. The following days focus on overview strategies for the Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Math and Essay sections of the test.
The PSAT Intensive Workshop will cover general and specific test-taking strategies that will increase familiarity with both the content and type of questions included on the PSAT.

Executive Functions are the basic skills that allow us to set goals and achieve them. They include skills like: planning, organizing, prioritizing, managing your time, staying focused on a task, completing tasks, and refocusing or shifting gears when you get off track. They also include organizing your thoughts and regulating your emotions.
Our Executive Function Coaches help teach students how to effectively change their short term habits in order to affect long term change. Our summer executive function coaching is directed toward managing summer reading and math assignments, coordinating and planning summer jobs and activities, and reflecting on past academic patterns and planning new methods for the upcoming year.
